About
Kristin Bernhardt Conrad
As an artist, I am inspired by how humans have sought meaning and connection by watching and aligning themselves with the cycles of flow and change in the world around them. Nature, while always stretching and evolving, seeks balance and harmony, and from that often springs beauty. I try to express tiny portions of my wonder and curiosity. I have used paint on canvas, charcoal on paper, and for many years now: clay, pigment and fire! My inspiration is seeded into each sculptural vessel and I hope it shines through for those who live with them, bringing joy or curiosity.
I work in a small studio in the mountain town of Nederland, Colorado, elevation 8,300 feet, in the Rocky Mountains west of the Boulder/Denver metro area, surrounded by my supportive family who have stopped pointing out the clay in my hair. On my daily walks with my dog, I witness the first stirrings of life in the spring, the exuberant flowerings of seemingly everything, the formation of all manner of seeds, and the inevitable dispersal and rest of winter. This year I have been fascinated with the flowering parts of pine trees and how they nurture and form pine cones and fresh needles in the most amazing variety of ways, depending on the tree species. I imagine that these visual (and sensory) influences will come forward in something I make in the future!
And so, in essence, I use art and my creative practice as a way to explore and understand our human experience.
